An insider look into the tech team: Coni’s experience
Meet Coni, one of our software developers! She joined us about 4 months ago and as part of the tech team, she works on many different things to help save more food from being wasted.
How long have you been at ResQ Club and what do you do here?
I've been at ResQ Club for 4 months, and with my team we maintain the visible face of ResQ Club, the apps. We also fix all of the little things that come up and implement new features if we have any. I’ve been working mostly on the web apps but I recently had to do some work in the mobile apps too. I focus mostly on the backend.
Why did you choose ResQ Club?
I wanted to work for a smaller company and for a company that had its own product because I hadn’t experienced that before. I also really like ResQ Club’s mission. In the world we live in today, it feels like a good idea to be working in this industry (ie. sustainability). And I guess it was the right choice because my husband has been telling me I am in a better mood and laugh a lot more since I started on the job!
How would you describe the company culture in three words?
Warm, accepting and open.
What did you find out on the job?
I am thinking about the company policies. For example, the fact that at ResQ Club, we receive our holiday days for the entire holiday period. I hadn't fully understood that before joining. It's like you can decide to leave your job, but instead of having to give up your holiday days, ResQ Club offers them upfront. That means you can change to a better job and not lose the vacation! There are also other policies I really loved, like our parental leave policy*. Even though I'm not a parent myself, I love how inclusive they are.
* Parental leave policy: One of our company benefits is our paid parental leave. We offer 3 months of fully paid parental leave, regardless of your gender or how you become a parent.
What is your proudest achievement at ResQ Club?
I would say I'm really proud of how quickly I've been able to make an impact in tech. I didn't take long to get on-boarded. I'm still learning things, but I'm also able to make changes that people notice.
One of my first contribution was for the Finnish sales team, I added a new selector for providers for them to choose in which language they want us to contact them. After I implemented it, the sales team was so excited!
What is the most interesting thing about the tech team at ResQ Club?
How healthy the team is. They are very supportive, it's a very nice team that always has your back if something happens.
For example I’m still new so I have a lot of questions. They are always willing to answer my questions and help me whenever I need. And when we have problems and it's an all hands on deck situation, everyone is willing to be there for moral support, even if we're not actively doing anything, we're here trying to solve this together.
What is the most interesting thing about tech at ResQ Club?
The product itself, or the technology that underpins our product. I can see a lot of potential to make it better. There are so many things that we can do to our technology to have a brilliant future! And if we had a perfect product and all of the problems were already solved, it would be quite boring.
How would you say that we embody sustainability at the office, apart from our product?
I think that's easy, all the activities the company organizes. On my second day, we went trash picking for example. Also, for our Secret Santa last year, gifts could not be bought and had to be from the giver’s home, to avoid buying something new and over consuming.
What do you like the most about your job?
I really like that I get to make an impact, not only for our customers with the things that I program and that people see, but also internally by making the lives of other teams easier.
In the future if someone asks me if I did something to help with climate change, I will be able to answer “Yes, I did something!”.
How is remote work for the tech team?
In the tech team, we have a member of the team who works 95% remote (*that person lives in another city and visits about once a month). We would not organize something that requires the entire team to be here out of nowhere, we always give advance notice and try to accommodate schedules.
We have a daily online coffee, and every Monday morning the entire ResQ Club team can join an online morning coffee to catch up after the weekend (and some join from the office lounge)
But I can go to the office as I want, it's really nice because if I don't have as much energy, I can stay at home or work half day at home and then half day at the office if I want to see more people. I think it really works!
Is there anything you want to tell people who might be interested in joining the tech team one day?
I think that we are a really nice team, we try to be very nice to each other. There's a lot of work to do but it's also fun, and we make sure to keep it fun. James, our tech lead, sometimes organizes fun things like a board games evening or dev day where we all work together on the same thing in the lounge of the office, etc..
