Silvia, one of our talented software developers, shares about her onboarding at ResQ Club.
If you prefer a more detailed version of Silvia’s experience, she shares more here:
Hi, I’m Silvia and I’m a developer here at ResQ Club. I’ve been working for the past half a year as a full stack developer and I fairly recently completed my onboarding. I thought I'd let you know how the process was for me so that you know what to expect if you join us.
To be honest I was pretty surprised and impressed about the process here at ResQ and how organized it was.
During the first 4 weeks, I had a clear schedule with meetings and goals about what I was supposed to achieve each of those weeks.
During the first week I didn't touch or see the code, I just got to meet different team leads and understand what the different teams inside ResQ do. This helped to get an understanding on how the tech team could help different teams achieve their objectives. I thought that was pretty cool because I didn't get just a tunnel vision of the tech team, but I got to see the wider perspective and how everyone contributes to our end goal.
I actually started doing some coding I would say on week 3, which was just small tasks that we call “onboarding tasks”. Those were non-critical tasks, where I got to touch different parts of the code like small integrations, UI tasks, bug fixes, and a little bit of refactoring… just a little bit of everything. During that time I got to work with the team, I got my code reviewed and I did some code reviews myself. It was a great time to understand how the company works as a whole and how our tech team works too.
I was overall super happy with my onboarding and felt supported along the way. I felt that I could work at my own pace, and work towards a nice goal. Even though those onboarding tasks were small, I felt they were very helpful. I can really recommend that approach to you!
